LEGO Brick Turns 50

The LEGO brick turns 50 at exactly 1:58 p.m. today, January 28, 2008.

I remember my first little set of LEGO, it was a simple little car with a LEGO man. My age? I don't know exactly but it was single digits. It was cool and fun, and then I got another LEGO set not long after that and it was a Jet Airplane. That is what really set me off on playing with the bricks instead of just putting the sets together and playing with them as designed via the instructions. Now I was able to make anything and everything. Not just a car or a plane. What a great toy.

Did you ever get a different brick system toy? I did. It was some kind of a space vehicle with wheels, and it was very cool, but those bricks would not work with
LEGO, so it just stayed a space vehicle and would not be incorporated into my latest LEGO build. That was disappointing mostly because it had some cool pieces.

Later on I got into the TECHNIC sets. My first one was a Bulldozer/Backhoe. I remember
thinking how much harder it was to put this set together compared to the other smaller sets, but how much cooler it was with moving parts and everything. If I recall correctly (which most of the time I don't) there was a rubber band or two used for tension. That's just plain CRAZY!

I did some searching and came up with some cool LEGO links for you. By the way, when you Google LEGO, you get 77,400,000 links.

Bless my mother. She saved all of my LEGO from my childhood and I still have them. I think that tonight I will indulge my (huge) inner child and build something or at least take them out and reminisce. Happy birthday LEGO brick.
